Surfboard Design
Autodesk, Inc. . (NASDAQ: ADSK) today announced that 42Surfboards, a small construction company surfboards standard of Oregon, was named Inventor of the Month of June 2008. 42 Surfboards uses Autodesk Inventor to create its line of high performance surfboards, fashioned from local wood from sustainable forestry. By avoiding the use of materials like foam and balsa, with a high carbon equivalent, 42Surfboards offers surfers an alternative that limits the impact of sport on the environment. The Inventor of the Month program recognizes the most innovative advances made in surfboard design and engineering by members of the community of product users of Autodesk Inventor family. The realistic 3D digital prototype is used to optimize and validate the product before you start production and reduces the need to build physical prototypes. To obtain the desired density, foam and balsa are the only materials used by major manufacturers of surfboards. Unfortunately, these two materials are not solid: the boards often break within a few months and must be replaced. In addition, foam and balsa wood have environmental drawbacks. The foam is made from oil by a process extremely toxic. As for balsa, it must be transported from South America to the rest of the world, resulting in significant carbon emissions. The hardwood is stronger and has been used for centuries to make surfboards. By cons, it is very heavy, which affects the speed and maneuverability of the board. With Autodesk Inventor 42Surfboards could create a new generation of surfboards, leveraging the strength of wood such as spruce and poplar, while achieving the same lightness and performance with similar materials lighter as foam or balsa. The key to this innovation is based 3D modeling software Inventor, which allows to define numerically the shape of a piece of wood and create a panel with exactly the desired thickness. By defining the exact shape of the wood, reduces board 42Surfboards while maximizing its strength and creates a solid surf, both very fast and highly manoeuvrable. "Inventor is the difference between just dreaming of an idea and put it into practice," said Lars Bergstrom, president of 42 Surfboards. "With solid modeling, we can surfboard design our boards with a precision of about one thousandth of an inch and manufactured to exact design. Without this feature, we would stay very far from the tolerance necessary for our surfboards, and we could not use wood harvested from our regions sustainable farming. ". 42 Surfboards is also using Digital Prototyping to quickly explore new ideas and product concepts without having to invest time and money on real prototypes. Consequently, the manufacturer now offers seven different models of surfboards, totally in wood. All benefit from unlimited life and go against the concept of "disposable board", due to decades of surf foam and balsa, but fragile economic. "42 Surfboards has identified the need for a surfboard design environmentally friendly, and Inventor gave him the means to achieve this vision," said Robert "Buzz" Kross, vice president of Autodesk Manufacturing Solutions. "We are pleased to make our 42 Surfboards Inventor of the Month. ". 42 Surfboards is a manufacturer of classic surfboards, located in the state of Oregon, USA. Hand in shaping local wood, the company creates high-performance surfboards and beautiful, with the aim of radically changing the criteria for choosing a board.
