Surfboard Foam Blocks
This next story was published in Waves site in March this year (and republished in the same site two months later!). At the time I did this interview, I was quite excited at the discovery, he sought an innovative product in the surf market and always had heard that it was impossible to recycle polyurethane surfboard foam blocks and make the process more environmentally friendly manufacturing boards. Business Partners and industry veterans from surfing in California, Joey Santley and Steve Cox (pictured) broke the old paradigm of a market boards during the last fair Action Sports which happened in late January in San Diego. With the launch of resurfacing Recycling and Green surfboard foam blocks Boards, they created a revolutionary platform for the manufacture of polyurethane-based boards recycled, making the long awaited reality sustainability in the supply chain's main product for the sport. The Green Foam (or "green foam") is a result of modern technology that allows reusing the remains of old blocks, transformed into a new block of high quality, with the same properties as a conventional model. Thus, with the support of an innovative collection system created by the resurfacing Recycling, the toxic wastes that old board that could end up in landfill common in the cities, no treatment, now return to the productive chain of surf. As could be expected, news was well received by industry and recycled foam blocks of Green Foam are already in the hands of some of the major shapers of today, with encouraging results. The proposed sustainability is reinforced with the use of polyurethane powder wasted in the process of shape - about 20% of the block - now utilized for the manufacture of asphalt and other uses are under study. Resurfacing of the Office of Recycling, which runs the mission to "cleanse" the surf industry, Joey Santley gave the following interview where he tells more about this story:. We idealize the concept of Green surfboard foam blocks in early 2008 and spent about a month researching and developing our methodology, which we take for Just surfboard foam blocks in Oceanside California. The hardest part was opening the doors of some factory foam to give heed our inventive process - even as it was widely publicized the idea that it would be impossible to recycle blocks of polyurethane foam for surfboards. But Just surfboard foam blocks opened its doors and minds to our invention and the rest is history. We have crushed the remnants of a company called Robertson's Ready Mix Concrete, where the polyurethane is recycled asphalt used to pave roads. It is still a work in small scale, but that proves the effectiveness of the concept. We are currently working on a pilot program for administrators of local landfills to create a specific route for the industry to the surfing carry out the procedure on a larger scale. Once agreed the details, this processs can be replicated worldwide. While the processing and management of a Green surfboard foam blocks costs a little more than a conventional polyurethane pad, we're not penalizing consumers for choosing an alternative more environmentally friendly. So we are practicing the same price of a conventional block in size and volume. Our surfboard foam blocks are produced in the system "cradle to cradle" which means we take the waste material to a board and repositioned in a new block with exactly the same construction and quality. We are excited to be the spokesmen for the good news that we can reduce our collective mark on the planet, but still using the material of our choice - in this case the polyurethane. Our Green Foam has the same properties of weight, strength and flexibility of the best blocks available in the market. The only fundamental difference is that pollute less to make our blocks, while we keep the waste materials out of landfills. Well, this first month we have already put the first batch of blocks in the hands of Green Foam shapers like Al Merrick, Matt Biolo's Lost, Rusty, Timmy Patterson, Cole Simler, Pat Rawson, Doc's Surf Prescriptions, Dev, Wellen between others. All boards have shaped and finished with surfboard foam blocks Green, and although in some cases there have been some imperfections that would normally not occur, it embraced the idea from the start. We are currently producing at full pace and the new block has not shown any defect. We are impressed with the results we have achieved in so little time. We have been well received by the stores and they have given us positive feedback, establishing a commitment to request their use of Green surfboard foam blocks shapers. They know that their consumers are ready for Green Foam, especially because the price be right and they do not have to pay a premium price, as with most recycled products. I believe that in a few months. We already have several professional surfers currently receiving planks competition with Green Foam. They can be seen under the feet of big names in the sport very soon. Things are happening more rapidly than we could imagine and hope the interest continues to grow worldwide. We are confident that most surfers have an ecological conscience and therefore make sustainable choices when they have the opportunity. The blog of Green Foam reports that by the end of June, about 500 boards have been produced with the recycled blocks. Among the owners of these boards are the professional surfers Cory Lopez, Chris Ward, Shea Lopez and Christian Fletcher, and artists such as actress Cameron Diaz and singer Perry Farrell - indeed, I never forget the surprise I had to see the leader of Jane's Addiction catching waves in the music video Stop.
